Dealing With an Overly Talkative Co-worker - The Muse

Managing an Overly Talkative Co-laborer - The Muse Managing an Overly Talkative Co-laborer I'm totally supportive of visiting with your partners. It fabricates affinity, which thusly constructs your relationship and can make you a superior teammate (and increasingly open to requesting proficient counsel). It can make your office a hotter, more amicable work environment, and it may even spare your activity. The individuals who can make discussion with a divider regularly exceed expectations in systems administration circumstances and associating with scaring customers. However, to be completely forthright, they can likewise disturb the hell out of their collaborators. Things being what they are, what are you to do when you have a partner who simply wants to make a plunge directly into a day by day gabfest as opposed to inquisitive if it's a decent time? (Spoiler alert: It's most certainly not.) Peruse on for three things you can say to an excessively loquacious collaborator who just can't get an indication. 1. I know! Overlook her and she'll disappear, is awful guidance. So is, look occupied. I comprehend the deduction behind it: You're apprehensive on the off chance that you draw in, you'll urge your partner to wait. Of course, in the event that you pose huge amounts of inquiries and ask your associate to expound, she'll stay nearby and proceed with the discussion. Be that as it may, on the off chance that she routinely stops by your work area to visit, chances are she's attempting to interface with you. Furthermore, excusing her will make her think she needs to invest more energy (read: stop back again after lunch). Along these lines, in the event that you have a moment, stop what you're doing, center around her, and make a pertinent, revelatory articulation. Gracious amazing I can't trust it took you 20 minutes to traverse the line at Starbucks! At that point, when she stops by later, you can grin and state that you are truly pummeled and don't have any more opportunity to talk today. (Occupied when she stops by the first run through? Switch your responses.) By every so often tuning in to this associate, you'll show you're keen on interfacing however can likewise single out when you'll make time to visit. 2. How about we examine this some other time. Now and then you have a couple of moments for a gabfest, however rather than your associate talking about the standard thing (Monday Night Football, excursion designs whatever it might be), she begins educating you regarding her date the previous evening. Indeed, organizations have inappropriate behavior trainings about what ought to and shouldn't be a subject of conversation, yet there's consistently an ill defined situation think: you talked about Kim Kardashian's Paper magazine spread yesterday yet would prefer essentially not to hear an in depth of night out on the town. While you ought to impart this isn't office discussion, there are approaches to do it without falling off like a chaperone saying, That is not suitable. On the off chance that this is an associate who is likewise your companion, you can address her in a similarly loquacious manner. Attempt this: Jill, I absolutely need to hear this story-would we be able to do it over mixed drinks rather than in earshot of the entire office? In case you're not close with this individual, recognize the ill defined situation as you set limits, and afterward rapidly change the subject. You know-I realize we examined big names and bareness recently, yet I'd preferably not talk about sentimental lives in the workplace. Elsewhere in the world, did you see Prince George's Christmas photograph? Thusly you can trade a couple of merriments and proceed onward. 3. I'm not glib. The two expressions above originate from a similar general guidance that the most ideal approach to deal with a talkative partner is to visit with him a piece, and afterward approach your work. (Since the result you get by being well disposed and building solid connections can merit a couple of moments out of your day.) However, this counsel doesn't generally work. In some cases, when the conduits have opened, it's difficult to close them. So what you're searching for is a sort, proficient approach to close your associate down-to stop the discussion before it begins. For this situation, adopt the break bring forth strategy and state something along the lines of, You know-I'm not glib. (It's the workplace form of the work of art, I am the only one to blame here.) If he's continually discussing The Voice, reveal to him you're not enthusiastic about TV. Or on the other hand disclose to her you experience difficulty pulling together on the off chance that you step outside of a work mentality, so you'd incline toward not to associate in the workplace. It won't win you any Miss Congeniality prizes, yet it ought to get your partner to quit irritating you. Still can't a catch a break? In the event that your solicitations for less chitchat fail to receive any notice and your partner is a steady interruption, it's an ideal opportunity to carry the issue to the consideration of HR or your chief. On the off chance that your collaborator is causing you this degree of misery, chances are others see her as a disturbance too. Somebody should converse with her about getting control it over for her expert turn of events. Some portion of being effective is building connections, offsetting your requirements with the necessities of others, and exploring various characters and work styles. You need to manage these issues when working with an extra loquacious partner. So visit every so often, and draw limits the remainder of the time. Photograph of youngster politeness of Shutterstock.

Supporting Women Who Breastfeed - Workology

Supporting Women Who Breastfeed - Workology Employer Obligations for Breastfeeding in the Workplace Women with children are the fastest-growing segment of the workforce. Balancing work and family is an important priority for them. Today, over 75 percent of women in the United States begin breastfeeding. When they return to work after their babies are born, time and space to express their milk during the work period help them continue to give their best to their work and do what’s healthy for their baby. Breastfeeding in the workplace can be a touchy subject, and I’d like to offer some basics for employers and employees inspired by a post from a local moms Facebook group Im a member of.   Employer Obligations for Breastfeeding in the Workplace The mother who asked for advice has been breastfeeding and pumping in the boss’s office. She works in a manufacturing environment so clean, private, and secure offices are in short supply she says. Her employer recently began asking her to pump in the bathroom. She pushed back on her employer, and so a rather long discussion happened inside this active Facebook group with over 70,000 members. Members wondered if it was illegal for the employer to ask her to pump in the bathroom? Who should she call to talk to at her office and if she should get an attorney?   The short answer to her question, is it legal to ask her to do that? My answer is it depends because employment law and requirements are so much more complicated than just a no or a yes. First, I’d like to provide some basics on the amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act that was included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA). Some of you, especially in smaller companies, may not know that a provision was put into the FLSA that requires you to provide break time and space for nursing mothers to be able to express breast milk as needed. What’s Considered Reasonable Break Time While Breastfeeding? First, employers must provide a “reasonable break time” for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child. The requirement applies for one year after the child’s birth. There is no limit on the number of the breaks to be provided, and it does not contain any guidance the duration of such breaks. In addition to providing reasonable breaks, the employer must also provide a place where the employee can express breast milk. The place must be somewhere other than a bathroom and must be “shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public.” Note that the law exempts any employer with fewer than 50 employees if providing a break (or a place to express breast milk) would impose an “undue hardship” on the employer. Under the PPACA, “undue hardship” is defined as “causing the employer significant difficulty or expense” when considered in relation to relevant factors. There was no clear definition of relevant factors. Additionally, the Affordable Care Act of 2010 requires new private health insurance plans, including those available in the new health insurance marketplaces, to provide coverage for specified women’s preventive health services with no cost sharing (e.g., copayment, coinsurance, or deductible). Breastfeeding support, supplies, and lactation counseling is one of these specified preventive services. The Department of has provided some guidance on this with a fact sheet and some additional guidance on state laws. These laws protect breastfeeding mothers with children under one year of age. What Can You Do If You Experience Push Back Breastfeeding Pumping at Work? My advice to the employees? Email your boss to get an electronic copy of the conversation (always document workplace legal issues!). Attach a copy of the FLSA requirements, copy HR and your boss on your email response and maybe your boss’s boss too depending on how many times you have chatted with your boss. Under the FMLA, companies are required to offer a mother’s room that has a comfortable chair, lock and place to pump. Employees can use their breaks and can be asked to take unpaid time to pump. This might extend your workday, but in my opinion, it’s important to be able to have privacy and an opportunity to do what’s best for you and your baby. Companies should consider doing more than the law requires if they want to attract candidates who have expectations of having a family (and 75 percent of women do). This impacts workplace diversity, your employer brand, and frankly, it’s the right thing to do. It’s not expensive to set aside a small break room with a locking door for nursing mothers, nor do you have to have one if you currently have no nursing mothers on staff. WomensHealth.gov has a video on simple space solutions and how to create a mother’s room here. This family-friendly benefit also brings your business a 3:1 return on investment (ROI) through lower health care costs, lower employee absenteeism rates (since babies are healthier), lower turnover rates, and higher employee productivity and loyalty. Taking care of breastfeeding moms shouldn’t be done just because it’s the law. It should be done because your company cares about employees, their families and helping women be successful in the workplace.

Also, to do that, they need a pioneer that would assist them with taking that way and would lead them to that goal. Therefore, a pioneer that each representative couldn't imagine anything better than to work with will h elp their kin in seeing how the business functions by introducing each and every piece of the activity that will fill in as an upskill for them.Whether you like it or not, their undertakings right currently won't keep going forever. What they do rather is they center around finding an answer for move forward. To make the long story short, genuine pioneers realize how to take in criticism and put their arrangements enthusiastically. They don't remain next to them just to direct each and every thing that their laborers need to do in light of the fact that doing this won't help them over time. They are not very severe, and they realize that their workers need to test, learn, find, and completely comprehend the entire procedure. They do their job as a facilitator by posing testing inquiries and by giving enough direction. At the end of the day, they realize how to give them space for them to search for arrangements when issues arise.Because of the trust and arrangement that they give, they ensure that there is an improvement. How to Snap Out of Networking Lethargy

How to Snap Out of Networking Lethargy oocoskun Fotolia.com There is a very prevalent trend right now where people have lost the energy to network. Attendance is down at some events, and people in career transition are resistant to the suggestion to spend the bulk of their time networking. This is a foolish mistake and now is the time to snap out of your networking lethargy. For every excuse people bring me, there is a good reason to overcome it. A job wont fall in your lap, and probably wont come through an advert. You have to get off your chair, dress accordingly, and make those external connections. Here are my thoughts on some of the more common excuses I hear for not networking: Too busy to network? Whether youre gainfully employed or in career transition, you must put the time into managing your career and nurturing your network. I tell people to think about their ROT (return on time) and with networking, there is a huge return. Maybe not today, maybe not even tomorrow, but the seeds you plant will benefit and enhance your career for years! Too shy to network? Whether youre a true introvert or not, you may have convinced yourself that youre not good at networking, or youre just not willing to push past the initial discomfort of practicing a new skill. Gather strength and ideas from these experts at Harvard Business Review, Inc.com and Psychology Today. Have a job so you dont need to network? I always say that the day you land a job is the day to start your next job search. Just as business owners must continually do business development to cope with an unpredictable flow of clients, its no different when you have a job. The fact you have a job today doesnt mean you will have a job tomorrow. Your future is always uncertain at best. Convinced networking doesnt work? You cant make up your mind after one meeting. If networking isnt bringing results, you may be using the wrong approach, connecting with the wrong people or attending the wrong event for your career aspirations and career management. Pinpoint and connect with people who can generate viable job leads and bring influence to your career goals. Politely and eloquently ask each person you meet for three further leads. Dont know where to start so you dont attend? Ask colleagues or mentors for referrals to both formal networking groups and influencers you can meet one-on-one. Check social media sites and Meetup.com for local groups, or start your own to really be known as a serious networker. Im a firm believer that there is a job for everybody, but with 91% of jobs in Canada unadvertised, youll have to network to find your next career opportunity.

Passion, Ability and Confidence a Career in Law

Passion, Ability and Confidence a Career in Law Andréa Hounto graduated from the University of Exeter, Tremough Campus, with BA (Hons) History and Politics in 2016. Shes currently a  Stagiaire at the European Court of Justice, Luxembourg.   Andrea Hounto, Exeter (Tremough Campus) Graduate and current Stagiaire at the European Court of Justice, Luxembourg After graduating from Exeter, I went on to do the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL, also known as the law conversion course). I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship from the law school (BPP), which covered the majority of my course fee. I then obtained a place on the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and decided to do an integrated Master of Laws (LL.M). Upon successful completion of the BPTC, I’ll be getting called to Bar of England and Wales. I’m currently undertaking a six-month internship at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, as the lucky recipient of the Hon. Sir Peter Bristow Scholarship. I was given this opportunity by my Inn of Court, who is funding me to be here. It is an amazing opportunity to develop both my legal experience and use my French language skills. When I return to the UK, I’ll be seeking to obtain pupillage in a London-based chambers, which is the final step to qualifying as a barrister. Ultimately, I am planning to become a human rights barrister and then qualify as a judge. I chose this career because I’m passionate about speaking up for those who are unable to speak for themselves; for the rights of all who are destitute. I want to be an advocate for the vulnerable and marginalised, those who are often overlooked by our legal system. I chose this career because I’m passionate about speaking up for those who are unable to speak for themselves; for the rights of all who are destitute. I want to be an advocate for the vulnerable and marginalised, those who are often overlooked by our legal system. What I enjoy most about my work is knowing that I am using my skills to impact lives in a positive way and bring hope to those who may have lost it. My degree put me in good stead for career at the Bar in that it developed my critical and lateral-thinking skills. I particularly enjoyed writing my third-year dissertation titled: ‘Is Margaret Thatcher the Ultimate Feminist Heroine?’, which explored the significance of Margaret Thatcher’s election as prime minister. Due to the largely polarized opinions of Thatcher, I was required to extract objective facts from tendentious material; a skill which will be invaluable at the Bar. Academics aside, being president of the African and Caribbean Society during my second year significantly boosted my confidence with regards to public speaking. Similarly, being BME Officer on the Liberation Committee in my third year gave me insight into what it means to advocate on behalf of a group of people and represent their interests. ..being president of the African and Caribbean Society significantly boosted my confidence with regards to public speaking. Similarly, being BME Officer on the Liberation Committee gave me insight into what it means to advocate on behalf of a group of people and represent their interests. I would advise all current students who wish to pursue a career in law, regardless of whether they want to be a barrister or a solicitor, to start their research early. Try to find out what the difference between a barrister and a solicitor is as early as possible, and then work towards building your experience in that field. Dont worry too much about specialisms, just try to get whatever legal experience you can get your hands on. The more experience you have, the easier it will be for you to ascertain which areas of law you like and which areas you dont like. I would also recommend applying for as many scholarships as possible to fund your legal studies (GDL, LPC, BPTC, LL.M etc.). Lastly, I would say: dont let the statistics scare you. Yes, law is competitive. Yes, you will face rejection and bumps in the road. Yes, getting into a top firm or chambers is extremely difficult. However, as long as you are prepared to work hard to achieve your goals, there is no reason why you cant do it. Be confident in your abilities! Yes, law is competitive. However, as long as you are prepared to work hard to achieve your goals, there is no reason why you cant do it. Be confident in your abilities! Volunteering is key at the beginning as you will be very inexperienced. As you build experience, you can look for paralegal roles or legal internships which will benefit you greatly when it comes to applying for pupillage (barristers) or Training Contracts (solicitors).

?? Why Every Job Seeker Needs to Get a Blockchain Job

?? Why Every Job Seeker Needs to Get a Blockchain Job 20 How to get a job in the one of the hottest industries of 2018. Photo by Julie Macey Have you noticed that you can't look at the job market headlines without the words “blockchain”, “bitcoin” or “crypto” coming up? First, the good news. There's a reason you can't avoid the buzz: All things blockchain are EXPLODING right now.eval The numbers are absolutely insane: On Indeed.com, blockchain-related job listings increased 631% from November 2015 until December 2017 Top freelancing marketplace Upwork.com's fastest growing skill in demand by employers in the first quarter of 2018 is “blockchain”. “In the fourth quarter 2017, it had 2,200 blockchain-related job posts, up 2,194% from the same period one year ago, when it only had 96 posts.” Startup platform AngelList has over 600 startups with open blockchain jobs (as of May 2018), and the number of job listings has doubled twice in the past year alone: eval And now, the bad news. Oh wait, there isn't any. Maybe you were expecting to hear that this boom is only for people in the IT world? While it is true that the demand is strongest for hardware and software engineers who know something about blockchain, every industry is looking to disrupt itself with this new technology. As a result, almost anyone who has an understanding of it can take advantage, regardless of profession. Demand is so high â€" and still growing! â€" that blockchain employers are bending over backwards to hire anyone who can help them: No previous experience? Doesn't matter. “Overqualified” in your field? Doesn't matter. From another country? Doesn't matter. You NEED to get into blockchain. Here's how. Before reading further: if a child asked, could you explain what a blockchain is? Yes No View Results What is a blockchain? Gaurang Torvekar, CEO of blockchain-based LinkedIn competitor Indorse.io, explains: A blockchain is a new kind of distributed ledger that is shared among a network of computers. To make changes to the information contained in the ledger, the users of the network must first agree that the changes are valid. The process of requiring consensus to make updates ensures that no single person or entity has complete control over the contents within the ledger. The end result is a shared record that thousands of people can access simultaneously and trust implicitly. Bitcoin, the first digital currency most people have heard of, uses a blockchain to manage transactions like this: Each step of the transaction in the image is strongly encrypted, which is why people refer to such digital currencies as cryptocurrencies or just crypto for anything related to them. I'm not technical… are you sure blockchain jobs are for me too? According to ITProPortal: “As these technologies have become widely recognised, more and more businesses are entering the marketplace offering innovative solutions to long-standing problems. The diversification that this is bringing the market has created enormous opportunity for workers looking to change jobs or even industry in 2018.” And Forbes chimes in: “Many companies won't require in-depth knowledge of crypto technology right off the bat; they know it's a new industry, so they may be willing to train talent on the job. That said, going in with as much knowledge as you can will only increase your chances.” In other words, demand is so high and across so many industries, now is a good time to change career paths if you've been thinking about it, and desperate companies may even train you on the fly to make the transition easier. So how do I find a blockchain job? Shelly Gorman, blogging on Risesmart.com, proposed a 5-point strategy that I've adapted here: 1) Research how blockchain will impact you Read everything you can find on blockchain technology in your industry and profession. How are companies beginning to use it? Which companies, or kinds of companies, are most likely to start using it soon? Which ways are experts projecting blockchain tech will lead to work changes? 2) Learn about blockchain itself in more depth Shelly recommends finding an expert who can mentor you, someone with vision about the potential benefits of blockchain adoption in your industry. If you know someone like that, great, and if they're willing to mentor you, fantastic. However, right now those people are few and far between (depending on your industry and location), and you might need time to network and build a relationship with them while they're being overwhelmed with requests from others like you. Absolutely seek them out, but even if there's someone you can turn to immediately, start learning on your own in parallel and ASAP through blockchain classes and courses online. Finally, learning is doing: start getting hands-on experience by volunteering your skills in joining a popular blockchain-related open source project. Also a great way to network, you may just meet someone who can mentor you. 3) Anticipate which related skills you'll need moving forward When you're doing your above research, think about which of your skills are transferable to open blockchain jobs you've seen. Which of your work achievements can translate too? Which skills will you need to be more valuable your new career direction? Pick one and start learning. 4) Rebrand yourself with your blockchain knowledge Once you feel more comfortable “speaking blockchain” and can demonstrate you have more knowledge and expertise than others who have held similar roles in the past â€" which shouldn't take much, if you act quickly â€" it's time to update your job search marketing documents to emphasize your newfound qualities. Update your resume, update your social profiles (especially LinkedIn), update your personal website, add a blockchain mentor to your references, etc., even if you're not actively looking for a job so you can passively attract recruiters' job inquiries and offers. 5) Make your job interview answers and stories relevant Prepare to communicate better when discussing your background and blockchain-related work. Which of your achievements and work stories can be made to relate to blockchain companies more easily? Focus on those, and de-emphasize others. Get ready to talk about your new knowledge and skills comfortably. Question of the article Do you know anyone who has changed career paths towards blockchain companies? How did they do it? Will you be next? Tell us in the comments. Cinematographer Resume Examples

Cinematographer Resume ExamplesA Cinematographer resume is required for any job seeking cameraman or film-maker. Your resume should not only show you qualifications and past work history, but it should be creative and unique to you. There are many resume examples that you can find online, which will help you make yours a little bit more unique and exciting. You need to keep in mind that the film industry has changed considerably since you started filming. Gone are the days of shooting a simple two minutes film and taking it home to watch it on the big screen, instead of editing the movie with the editor. Now, most cinematographers start out in the film industry as special effects, location, or design teams. Most will stay in this category or get promoted into departments that create special effects and become re-releases for regular feature films. Most cinematographers started out in the film industry by working their way up through the ranks of more experienced directors, or other cre w members on major film productions. They began as 'street level' crew members, who would start by creating designs and making special effects for sets in the film industry. Once these crew members get experience with each other, they would begin to freelance. This is when they would choose their own projects to work on.The main reason that these crew members do this is because they want to create their own jobs. They have all the skills and equipment they need, but they don't want to work for someone else for the rest of their lives. A Cinematographer resume should demonstrate that you can get things done on your own and even provide your own work history as proof of your skills. The next step you should do when creating your Cinematographer resume is to list all of your special skills and cinematic history. List all of the titles that you've worked on so far. Be sure to include specific details of each job title in your resume. This will help your employer to get a quick idea of ho w talented you are, and how you are going to fit into their production department. What you should be careful to avoid when writing about job titles is to forget about all of the other details. Instead, focus on the main subject of the job, like the title of the film. Explain the creative elements that your specific job description provides, and this will help to highlight your skills. List them all, including what you did and how much time it took to complete the project. After you have listed all of your jobs and were able to highlight them in your own film industry resume, then you need to put in your previous work history. Include all of the positions you have held up to now. You need to list every position that includes any special skills and any years of experience. This is important because it will show that you have experience in the field, and that you are capable of doing the job. Add anything relevant to this too, such as assignments, short films, the kinds of films you hav e worked on, and anything else that is relevant to your work history. If you follow these tips, your Cinematographer resume will be easy to write, and you will come across as someone who is extremely knowledgeable and creative. Always remember to emphasize your skills, and not just your previous work history.

Did Barack Obamas Web 2.0 Campaign get him into the White House

Did Barack Obamas Web 2.0 Campaign get him into the White House Regardless of political views, there’s no doubt that Barack Obama is one of the best examples of someone who made sure his personal brand was everywhere.   He has also received a lot of media attention for his smart way of utilizing web 2.0 during his campaign. Obama is a campaign pioneer who took advantage of technology in order to create a viral message and reach individuals who may not have been reached through traditional media channels such as newspaper and radio. On the morning of Election Day, I received a very personalized and thoughtful email from Barack “himself” asking for my vote.   I was stunned at how he got my work email address and sent it right at 8.30 am, but turns out I wasn’t alone!   The Obama campaign had a database (estimated to be over 10 million email addresses), which they used to send out emails at times they thought people would be most likely to open their emails. Along with an application created for the iphone, Obama also took advantage of text messaging to spread the word.   He announced Joe Biden’s nomination to V.P. to 3 million people via text, and continued to send text messages and asked that people forward the messages on.   Very viral! Barack also posted You Tube videos which followed his campaign, and made sure he was visible on several social networking sites.   He had over 130,000 followers on Twitter and followed about the same number of people and responded to their tweets. With this type of online presence, I assume voters could feel a sort of “personal” relationship with him.   Barack’s online presence made him a real guy and someone you can put your confidence and trust too because you had fewer degrees of separation.   It could be said that this type of viral branding campaign subconsciously showed people that Barack cares about each individual American, and will continue that into his presidency.

How to Beat the Odds During Your Job Search

How to Beat the Odds During Your Job Search Applying to hundreds of jobs online isn’t the best solution for landing an interview or job.  So why do you spend so much time doing this? Less than 50% of hires come from job boards: Finding a job online and applying is relatively painless, or less painful than networking, so that might explain why so many job seekers find themselves defaulting to the job boards. However, these account for less than half of all external hires according to multiple studies. 75% of resumes dont make it through the ATS: Applicant tracking systems are flawed. They often knock out qualified candidates based how your resume is formatted and the words you use. an estimated  75 percent of candidates are knocked out of the running due to formatting inconsistencies and key words. So why would a company use an ATS if they may miss out on a candidate? Because the average job posting receives 50-100 applications according to CareerXroads Sources of Hire study. Often  this isnt the only open job they are trying to fill learn how to play the ATS game by reading Meet the Robots Reading Your Resume. Your odds of landing an interview based on blindly submitting an online application are slim at best. So is there a better way? Proactive  targeting: Many career coaches and job search experts recommend creating a list of target companies you would like to work for. This allows you to identify  people you know (or don’t know YET)  within these target companies so you can  networking, especially if there aren’t any jobs posted. Yes, some hiring managers will always be on the look out for great talent, whether they have an opening or not. But an even better reason is that jobs are posted internally before they are posted publicly. Do the two-step   find a job, find a contact: The reality is, life gets in the way. You can’t always be as proactive. And let’s face it, sometimes, it feels good to find a job and apply. So for those of you who are using the job boards, heed this advice. Let’s say you find the perfect job on a job board. Your first instinct is to submit your online application and resume- stop. Don’t do that yet. Go to the company’s career site and check the job out. Look for contact information or clues about who the hiring manager might be. Now go over to LinkedIn and search for the contact’s name or job title of the likely hiring manager. If you do find a the persons profile on LinkedIn, you probably won’t be connected. How will you reach out to them? One option, if you dont have a premium LinkedIn account is to see what groups the hiring manager belongs to (if you can) and join one of the  groups. This will allow you to engage in a conversation they are in within the group or send an invitation to connect on LinkedIn. Another option is to Google the name and look for their account on an open social network like Google+ or Twitter, where you can reach out to them without restriction. If you can’t find the  hiring manager anywhere, look for someone in the company who you could reach out to using those same steps. Your short invitation to connect or outreach should peek their interest. You can do this by referencing a shared interest (personal or professional), or referencing something in their profile or status update. You want to cone across as interesting or  likeable, not a desperate job seeker. Make  the connections: It is awkward, uncomfortable and perhaps even ill-advised to immediately jump to asking for their help getting the job. Before your new “best friend” is willing to help you, they have to know and/or trust you. Flattery will get you everywhere, as long as it is genuine. Asking for advice is usually well-received. Ask how they like working for the company, how long they’ve been there, how they landed their job. Increase  your chances by 40% get referred: Now that you have established rapport with a company insider, it is now time to ask if their company has a referral program. If the company does, you should know there are financial incentives for the employee if you are hired. Referred candidates are twice as likely to be interviewed and 40 percent more likely to be hired according to Bank of New Yorks research. Let your contact know what job you are interested in and  keep your fingers crossed that your contact is  willing to be a referral. If not, they may still be willing to be an informant, someone who can keep you up to date on where the company is in filling the position. The key to your success is making the company insider feel good about the exchange. Did you make them feel like they helped you? This is up to you. Show your gratitude and appreciation by sending them a thank you. And, by all means, be sure you keep them in the loop about your candidacy.

Magnetize Your Executive LinkedIn Profile with These SEO Tips

Magnetize Your Executive LinkedIn Profile with These SEO Tips Creating an attractive LinkedIn profile is valuable for anyone who’s searching for a new job. However, even the cleanest and most attractive profiles won’t be discovered if you don’t incorporate the right amount of SEO keywords in them. If you’re new to SEO or don’t necessarily know the right ratio of keywords to incorporate, it’s worth it to hire an executive LinkedIn profile writer to help you optimize yours. You’ll have a much better chance of your profile showing up higher in the search results and being noticed. Here are some SEO tips to consider to make your LinkedIn profile act as a magnet to recruiters and hiring managers. Load Your Headline With Keywords Many recruiters look at the headline first before they read a profile any further. You only have a limited amount of characters to include in your LinkedIn profile headline, so make the most of every one of them. Think about what potential recruiters would search for. LinkedIn will create a default headline for you based on the information you input into your profile, but it’s not the SEO-rich headline you want. Change it up to add more relevant keywords and job titles recruiters are most likely to search for. Scatter Keywords Throughout Other Sections Your LinkedIn profile headline is a short section but can take some time to develop thoroughly since every character matters. Once you finish it, don’t forget about the other sections. SEO applies to all sections, even though a recruiter is going to likely read your headline first. Part of LinkedIn profile development is making the most of every section while ensuring the text and information flows naturally so it’s easy to read and enhances your brand. Doing so will give you a much better chance of getting recognized and potentially making new connections as a result. Make Your Brand Evident One mistake executives sometimes make is focusing too much on incorporating SEO keywords and neglecting to demonstrate their personal brand. A LinkedIn profile with great keywords will show up higher in the search results, but if there’s no meaningful content present, then a recruiter is going to pass it up. Combining SEO with a powerful branding message is something an executive LinkedIn profile writer excels at and is worth considering to optimize your profile. Professional Resume Services strives to help executives maximize their job search by focusing on all the details of LinkedIn and SEO. We are much more than simply a resume writing service. 18 Highly Successful People on The Song That Gets Them Hyped

18 Highly Successful People on The Song That Gets Them Hyped There’s something oddly intoxicating about a good pump up jam. All those Prince hits, those Hall and Oates tunes, those Beyonce tracks we blast at full volume to remind us that we are, in fact, irreplaceable, deliver the sweet serotonin blasts that get us through the day. With the right amount of mojo (or caffeine) the songs we rock out to when we need to feel to excited, or inspired, or uplifted, can motivate better than any Ted Talk out there. That goes for people at the top of their game, too, who are not immune to a solid fist pump/head-bang/YAS QUEEN every now and then. We know â€" we asked them. Here are the songs that some of our favorite people use to gas themselves up. “Lose Yourself,” Eminem “I listen to music during my workouts mostly. When I want to get motivated it’s usually harder rock, pop or dance music with a faster beat. One song that always gets me fired up ‘Lose Yourself.’”- Ken McBride, CEO, Stamps.com “Still Standing,” Goodie Mob “I got to promote this record 20 years ago when it released; anytime I feel uninspired or need additional motivation, like before a pitch meeting, I listen to this to remind myself how far I’ve come and that I’m still standing.” â€"Donald Albright, Cofounder of Tenderfoot TV; producer of true-crime podcast “Atlanta Monster” “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,” Chicago “I was eighteen years old when I first heard this song, behind the wheel of a Pontiac firebird, and exceeding the posted speed by 40mph. I blamed the song, and the officer let me off with a warning.” â€" Mike Rowe, Host of Facebook Watch series “Returning the Favor” and Dirty Jobs   “Ain’t Got it Like That,” Earl St. Clair “I listen to “Aint Got It Like That” as I sit down to organize my inbox in the morning. Archive. Star. Delete. I’m grooving with Earl til I hit Inbox 0.” â€" J. LaLonde, Vice President of Content, Head of Studio at Whistle Sports “Shake it Off,” Taylor Swift “My kids tease me about Taylor Swift being my guilty pleasure. If this song doesn’t put a smile on your face and inspire you to get back at it then you need to check your pulse. This was my final jam song before I ran this year’s Boston Marathon.” â€" Jeff Somers, President of Insureon “Volare (I Will Fly),” Gipsy Kings “Sometimes I need to clear my head before a product development meeting so I listen to [Gipsy Kings.] It reminds me of living in Madrid when I was in my twenties. The days were creative and carefree â€" wandering through the Prado museum, marveling over Picasso’s Guernica, staying out all night dancing, and going to Gipsy Kings concerts!” â€" Marla Beck, CEO and Cofounder of Bluemercury “On to the Next One,”Jay-Z “It’s the entrepreneur’s anthem. It’s about expansion, moving up, and never settling. And the beat is sick.” â€" Ryan Serhant, star of Bravo’s Sell it Like Serhant and Million Dollar Listing: NY “Nessun Dorma,” Puccini “When your dad is from Vienna and your mom is from Rome, you grow up with opera and learn to love it.” â€" Rod Hochman, CEO of Providence St. Joseph Health “DNA,” Kendrick Lamar “The message of the song reminds me of where I’ve come from and my journey to who I am today, which gives me the motivation I need to walk with grace and be my best self in any situation.” â€" Suemyra Shah, General Counsel at Whistle Sports; Co-Producer, Festival Batuque (Brazil) “Thunder,” Imagine Dragons “To get in the right mindset before addressing an audience on stage or TV.” â€" John Tabis, Founder and CEO, The Bouqs Company “A Million Dreams,” The Greatest Showman Soundtrack “I’m a cheesy father of four young kids, so, our family’s anthem is currently “A Million Dreams,” which we literally listen to every morning before school. The lyrics remind us that each new day is full of possibilities and ‘a million dreams is all it’s gonna take, a million dreams for the world we’re gonna make.’” â€" Chris Chuang, CEO, Republic Wireless “Long Time,” Boston “I listen to it in my car because it reminds me of my high school days.” â€" Howard Eirinberg, CEO, Kronos Foods Corp. “Giant Steps,” John Coltrane “I listen to this before a big meeting to clear my head and psych myself up.” â€" Trip Adler, CEO and Co-founder, Scribd “1979,” The Smashing Pumpkins “When I’m alone in the car and want something loud.” â€" Gerun Riley, President, Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation “Home,” Marc Broussard “It’s a great song that build up momentum and keeps you focused on [my] workouts.” â€" Ben Midgley, CEO and Co-Founder, Crunch Franchising “The Marriage of Figaro,” Mozart “When I have a big day that includes rehearsal, meetings, and performance, I know I’m going to need a lot of inspiration to carry me through. Nothing focuses my mind like Mozart. I’ll put on Renée Fleming singing Marriage of Figaro arias, and I will know I’m ready for anything the day brings.” â€" Monica Yunus, Co-founder and Co-executive director, Sing for Hope “Speed of Sound,” Coldplay “I listen to this song to get motivated before meetings with scientists and corporate donors, because it’s about being creative, imaginative and bold.” â€" Sung Poblete, President and CEO, Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) “Taking Care of Business,” Bachman-Turner Overdrive “This has become my team’s rally cry. Where Does Volunteer Work Belong On A Resume - Work It Daily

Where Does Volunteer Work Belong On A Resume - Work It Daily Most often, volunteer work appears toward the end of a resume, after work history. Related: Top 7 Resume Trends For 2015 However, if you have been out of the workforce for a while, are a recent college graduate or are changing careers, your volunteer activities may be the showcase for your most important skills and accomplishments. As a recent college graduate or a career changer, you might hone new skills as a volunteer in your field, in preparation for a full-time job. For example, if you want to work in the healthcare industry, you might volunteer at a hospital; if you want to become a graphic designer, you might lend your skills to a nonprofit in search of a logo. If you’ve been out of the workforce for a while, volunteering may be an excellent way to keep your skills sharp. An IT professional might volunteer to help a nonprofit organization maintain its computers; develop a program to track donors or clients; or enhance their website. In all those cases, it might be worthwhile to mention your volunteer work early in the resume. Wherever it is placed in a resume, even a brief mention of volunteer work is important. Most companies are conscious that they need a thriving community around them in order to succeed, both as employers and as providers of products and services. Hiring managers and recruiters know companies appreciate a spirit of “giving back” in their employees. Your volunteer work identifies you as someone who also appreciates that spirit. All About Employee Resource Groups

All About Employee Resurce Groups The belastung thing you probably feel like doing at work is taking on more work like joining a group. You already spend the bulk of your time in the office and regularly meet with colleagues for projects (not to mention the mental load youve been juggling and the mother-manager syndrome thats already hurting your career), so why would you want to spend more time meeting with coworkers when youve got a life at home youd like to keep balanced?Well, perhaps youd want to join a work group because there are some tailored to people just like you a parent, a woman, a person of color. However you identify, there may be a place for you in an employee resource group, which meet to solve the aforementioned stressors, setbacks and discrimination you may face. What Is an Employee Resource Group (ERG)?Sometimes called affinity groups, employee resource groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups that foster a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with organiza tional mission, values, goals, business practices and objectives, according to Catalyst. Other benefits include the development of future leaders, increased employee engagement and expanded marketplace reach.Companies first started forming ERGs in the 1960s as networking organizations for women and people of color, according to Working Mother. Typically, the company runs them with support from senior management, such as an executive sponsor, as well as the companys Diversity Inclusion Department. They each have budgets and goals for their members employees from across the organization who recommend organizational changes when necessary. What Are the Benefits of an ERG?According to The United States Census Bureau, minorities are expected to reach majority status by 2044 due, in part, to the projected growth of Asian, Hispanic and multiracial populations. Companies are therefore looking to increase diversity and promote more people in marginalized groups. And perhaps thats why, accor ding to a 2014 survey byThe New Talent Times, almost half (48 percent) of the 1,554 adults in the age range of 18 to 34 were very interested or at least somewhat interested in joining an ERG to push for ansicht types of changes. Here are some of the benefits of joining oneMembers of ERGs share knowledge.Peers in ERGs support one another in dealing with issues that come up in the organization.ERGs have power in numbers that can change the organization for the better.ERG members can develop leadership skills by taking initiative and working together. What Types of Companies Have Employee Resource Groups? As of 2016, 49 percent of companies in the Diversity Best Practices Inclusion Index (a new meakoranversment of organizations diversity progress) had an ERG in place. And many more companies have been expressing interest in implementing a myriad of ERGs since and some companies are setting diversity targets.Companies with Employee Resource GroupsDiversity Inc. came up with a list of compa nies with the best ERGs based on several factorsWhether ERGs have formal chartersRacial/gender breakdowns of groupsPercentages of top executives who are the sponsors of behauptung groupsWhether ERGs are used for recruitment, onboarding of new employees, talent development, marketing, mentoring and diversity trainingIf the ERGs successes are measured through retention, engagement, talent development and other contributions to business, like focus groups, client interactions and marketing ideasHere are the top companies that Diversity Inc. recognized for their ERGsEYATTJohnson JohnsonEli Lilly and Co.KPMGSodexoHiltonMonsantoNew York LifeComcast NBCUniversalPwCAetnaMastercardAt Johnson Johnson, for example, communicating the importance of fighting for diversity and inclusion at work is critical. As we are going through our talent process throughout the year, whether goal setting or coaching conversations or a mid-year review, were always giving out training materials, and weve embedde d diversity and inclusion into those materials so that people are always thinking about how they can be more inclusive and making sure that there arent any hidden biases that may be impacting our thinking, Wanda Hope, chief diversity officer, told Forbes.Likewise, ATTs true culture of inclusion where every voice matters is one of the reasons the company is successful in its diversity and inclusion initiatives, Cynthia Marshall, senior vice president, human resources and chief diversity officer also told Forbes. Through their ERGs, employees can worker smarter, not harder, together. What Are the Types of Employee Resource Groups? Many ERGs formed organically out of the need for people of difference to feel a sense of belonging and create relationships with people of similar backgrounds, wrote Erika Irish Brown, global head of diversity and inclusion at Bloomberg LP for Bloomberg. These forums offered support, understanding, information and resource sharing that would hopefully ensure p articipants collective success. At their most basic, these organizations provided necessary safe spaces at a crucial time, when people of difference werent comfortable being seen together and supporting each other within office walls. Sanctioned or not, these safe spaces and support systems made all the difference in the world and since then, they have evolved into much, much more.So what are the different safe spaces? Here are eight common ones.1. WomenThese ERGs for women are inclusive, but tailored to women, specifically.2. VeteranThese ERGs are for military veterans.3. DisabledThese ERGs are for anyone who is differently abled, both physically and mentally.4. People of ColorThese ERGs are for people of color. There are similar groups for Latin Americans, Asians and other marginalized groups.5. Remote WorkersThese ERGs are for anyone who works out of the office.6. CaregiversThese ERGs are for both women and men who are the primary caregivers in their families, whether theyre car ing for children or parents or anyone else.7. LGBTQThese ERGs are for anyone who identifies with the LGBTQ community or are curious.8. Multi-FaithThese ERGs are for all different faith groups. How Can You Start an Employee Resource Group? If your company does not already have an ERG for you, you can likely start one. Here are some simple steps to getting one up and running1. Talk with the HR and Diversity Inclusion department to inquire about starting a group.Essentially, youll want to figure out your organizations policy toward such groups does it recognize or provide support to these groups? Or are you fighting a bigger battle? If they do recognize these groups, what are the required steps for establishing the group within your particular company? And if there is no process in place for forming such groups, let them know that youll be creating one.2. Write a mission statement and goals.Any ERG should have a simple mission statement (here are some examples of mission statements). Y ou will also want to come up with and prioritize the goals for the short and long-term. For example, if your group is for the LGBTQ community, your goals may be to implement or change specific policies.3. Cast a wide net for members.Youll want to start looking for people who are also interested in your group because there is power in numbers. Youll also be able to better understand the goals of the group as a whole by listening to everyones concerns, beyond just your own. Be sure to be inclusive. For example, if youre starting a caregiver ERG, be sure to be inclusive of adoptive, foster and same-gender parents and caregivers, as well as anyone who may fill these roles but are supportive of the need to help them.4. Come up with a tentative plan to accomplish your goals and draft a budget.Once you understand the goals of the group, figure out a general plan of how youre going to tackle each one. When you get a grip on your plans, youll be able to draft a budget to take back to HR.5. P romote your group.Once you have a group in place and youve been given your budget, it doesnt stop there. Keep promoting the group the attract and retain members.Remember that successful ERGs typically boast the following factorsBoth HR and management buy-in and approvalHigh numbers in terms of people (and leaders within the group)Clearly delineated organizational structureAn agreed-upon planRealistic expectationsWhat Are the Potential Pitfalls of Employee Resource Groups?Despite the many obvious benefits of ERGs, there are some potential pitfalls and signs that companies dont actually support diversity and inclusion, despite ERGs efforts.1. They may not be as effective as other diversity and inclusion efforts.Over the past several years, I have witnessed the advent, maturation and demise of numerous employee resource groups, wrote Isaac Dixon, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, associate vice president of HR at Lewis Clark College, for the Society for Human Resource Management. Many were founded wit h the admirable behuf of giving employees who represent a protected class under the law a safe place to air ideas, issues or concerns. Some had very prescriptive work baked into their charters, while others were less specific in their objectives.Soon enough, however, objections cropped up. Resource groups for women and minorities were challenged by white men who felt excluded, for example. This type of dissension led employers to try to sharpen their groups missions or purposes. The real problem, however, is that ERGs seem like relics of a bygone era. Organizations large and small, public and private, are reshaping these groups into diverse teams that are far more strategic and inclusive. One need only look at the proliferation of diversity, equity and inclusion committees to see how much of the work that ERGs used to do has broadened in both scope and depth.2. Participants arent all always active.Dixon said that many members of ERGs lack participation, and theyve cited the need for greater, effective leadership direction and commitment. He argued that employees of varying ethnicities and genders have different notions of success, which makes it difficult to achieve real benefits from ERGs diversity and inclusion efforts, despite their intentions.3. They give the false impression that the workplace is free of discrimination. The mere existence of ERGs can give the false impression that a companys diversity problems have been magically solved, Dixon added. For example, a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychologyfound that white men perceived the mere presence of diversity councils, targeted mentoring and affinity groups as evidence that all employees were being treated fairly, he explained. This perception persisted even when the men were presented with anecdotal evidence of discrimination and information that challenged the effectiveness of diversity initiatives at their companies.4. Theyre sometimes considered a waste of time.Fairygodb oss has done research of its own, diving into how these groups work and how they can be better leveraged to advance diversity in the workforce. The team asked 400 women about the value of ERGs and found that while these groups get a lot of positive feedback, women sometimes deem the groups to be a waste of time if they can find the time to participate at all.Of the women surveyed (all of whom have access to a womens networking group), 65 percent of the respondents said they do participate, and 70 percent of those who are involved with their womens ERG believe it does indeed have the power to create changes in their companies policies. In fact, 55 percent of the respondents said that their womens ERG has helped to enhance parental leave benefits 53 percent said that the group helped to push for more flexibility or better vacation policies and 44 percent said that the ERG in their company helped to implement a mentorship or sponsorship program to make it easier to find mentors at wor k.Nonetheless, however, there were some women who didnt join and they didnt do so for a number of reasons. Of the respondents who didnt join their womens network, 33 percent said that they hadnt because they think its largely controlled by HR and wouldnt allow for honest dialogue 30 percent said that they think its a waste of time or that it doesnt accomplish anything meaningful within the company and 27 percent said that they hadnt joined the ERG at their companies because they dont believe it would add value to their careers.Heres a helpful breakdown of Fairygodboss survey resultsSo there are pros and cons to ERGs, and its critical that companies implement them and run them with the right intentions.Last WordERGs can be hugely beneficial if carried out correctly. If you think your own ERG or your companys ERGs begins operating in ineffective or potentially harmful ways, speak up these groups have been crafted with the intentions to help, and by being an advocate and a leader, yo u can create the change you wish to see.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a multimedia journalist and an adventure aficionado with a keen cultural curiosity and an affinity for solo travel.
